HASSLING DRILL

AIM:

To teach surfers how to handle the pressure of other competitors hassling them in heats.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out for 20 minutes.
  • Surfers are split into pairs with one surfer being required to get two quality waves in the twenty minute period.
  • (The coach may even allocate a 2 wave total score for the surfer to attempt to achieve.)
  • (The coach may even allocate a 2 wave total score for the surfer to attempt to achieve.)
  • The other surfer is directed to hassle the first surfer for the duration of the heat and stop them from getting the quality waves.
  • For more advanced surfers, two surfers may be allocated to hassle one.

NOTES TO THE COACH

The coach should instruct the “hassled” surfer to attempt to get away from the “hassling” surfer.

When paddling back to the peak, paddle to another peak down the beach, for example.

The “hassling” surfer is instructed to stay close, and inside the “hassled” surfer on the peak.

If the“hassled” surfer catches a wave, the “hassling” surfer must wait for their return to the line-up, to begin the process again.

This drill is more about handling the pressure of being hassled rather than just catching waves.
