FIRST AND LAST DRILL

AIM:

To teach surfers to catch a quality 1st and last wave in their heats.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out for 20 minutes.
  • Ask them to surf the drill like a normal heat.
  • The surfers are scored on 3 waves.
  • Their 1st and last waves caught, irrespective of those waves quality and scores, plus one other.
  •  The surfers can catch more than three waves.

NOTES TO THE COACH

This drill encourages the surfers to look for a quality 1stand last wave to start and finish their heats.

Discuss with the surfers what a good wave looks like and its manoeuvre potential for that day.

Just like the “3 Wave Drill”, this drill teaches surfers to be more selective than they normally would be in their free surfing.

Having the ability to be calm and patient when in competitive heats is a key component to success.
