TAG TEAM SURFING

AIM:

To train the anaerobic and aerobic energy systems and the muscles involved in the hard paddle catch waves during a competitive heat.

PREPARATION:

Go for a light jog on the beach followed by whole-body dynamic stretches, or, have the surfers go for a 20 minute surf to loosen themselves ready for a hard effort.

DRILL:

  • Divide the surfers into equal teams and ask each surfer to catch between 1-3 waves in a specific time (depending on the conditions). After completing the task, the first surfer returns to the beach where he tags the second surfer. This continues for a set time, number of repetitions, or number of turns each surfer must complete, as determined by the coach.

NOTES TO THE COACH:

Besides the fitness aims of the drill, the coach can ask the surfer to try and perform a certain task on the wave they catch.

For example, perform a particular manoeuvre, or try to perform a set number of manoeuvres. In addition, tag team strategies can be discussed when coaching advanced surfers.
