LAYBACK DRILL

AIM:

To practice the technique of the layback snap.

PREPARATION:

Explain the situations when a layback snap could be performed. Demonstrate how to perform a quality layback snap and ask the surfers to simulate the action on the beach. Explain how the scoring for this drill is allocated.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes. Score each wave normally out of 10 points.
  •  Award 3 bonus points for every successfully completed“layback” snap. These additional bonus points are to encourage the surfers to attempt the target manoeuvre.

NOTES TO THE COACH

The layback snap is a manoeuvre that is performed in the steep pocket of a forehand wave. It is not a manoeuvre that is performed

successfully on fat waves. The momentum from the preceding bottom turn is the force that helps re-centre the surfer over the surfboard after the manoeuvre is performed.

The technique for performing the “layback” snap is”

  • Perform a quality bottom turn
  • Lean backwards before reaching the top of the wave, touch the wave face
with the trailing hand, and continue to look down the line
  • The momentum from the preceding bottom turn will re-centre the surfer
    over the surfboard
