180 TURN DRILL

AIM:

To get surfers to attempt complete/full manoeuvres in small waves.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises.

Clarify with them the effort expected by the coach and explain the benefits of the training to their surfing performances.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes or for a specific number of waves (between 3-6, depending on the conditions).
  • Ask the surfers to attempt to perform full manoeuvres on the waves they ride.
  • For example, full roundhouse cutbacks with foam rebound, vertical re-entries, full snaps.
  • Score the manoeuvres 1, 2, or 3 points depending on the quality of the manoeuvres performed.

NOTES TO THE COACH

This drill is an ideal drill when the surf is small (0.5 metre or less).

Good surfers are nimble enough to produce quality manoeuvres in such small surf conditions.

Their secret is speed and strength.

Ask the surfers in this drill to first create their speed, then use that speed to perform quality manoeuvres.
