THREE WAVE DRILL

AIM:

To get surfers focused on the key components of quality surfing. Speed, utilizing the whole wave, and commitment.

PREPARATION:

Explain to the surfers that quality performances are made up of a number of key components.

In this drill the surfer focuses on speed, top-to-bottom surfing, and “halo” manoeuvres.

DRILL:

  • Ask the surfers to surf for three waves only.
  • They are instructed to surf as fast as possible on the first wave, surf top-to-bottom on the second wave, and perform a“halo” manoeuvre to start the third wave.
  • After the three waves have been surfed, the surfer returns to the beach to evaluate their performance.

NOTES TO THE COACH

This drill is an ideal starting drill for a training session.

It forces surfers to think about and perform aspects of quality performances.

After the surfers have demonstrated the three styles of surfing, further drills targeting other areas of surfing performance, can be commenced.
