FIVE MINUTE DRILL (AS MANY WAVES AS POSSIBLE)

AIM:

To train the anaerobic and aerobic energy systems and the muscles involved in the hard paddle to catch waves during a competitive heat.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by whole-body dynamic stretches.

Clarify with them the effort expected by the coach and explain the benefits of the training to their surfing performances.

DRILL:

  • The surfers start from the beach and are directed to catch as many waves as possible in a five minute period. The surfer must get back to the starting point before the five minutes has elapsed.
  • The waves surfed are scored normally if the coach wishes to score the surfing. Rest five minutes, before commencing the next set. Repeat the drill 3-6 times depending on the fitness of the surfer and the stage of training.

NOTES TO THE COACH:

This drill is especially suited for small/close to the beach breaking surf.
