BIG SURFBOARD DRILL

AIM:

To develop a smoother style.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfer to bring their bigger surfboard to training if they have one. Alternatively the coach must bring a larger surfboard to training.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes or for a specific number of waves (between 3-6, depending on the conditions).
  • Ask them to slow their surfing down to minimise errors that could be caused by the longer surfboard or the surfer being unfamiliar with the surfboard.

NOTES TO THE COACH

The use of this longer surfboard forces the surfer to draw longer arc when surfing.

They must in turn, hold their low stance longer as their normal motor pattern will not work well with the longer surfboard.

This drill would be quite useful in conjunction with the “hold” drill outlined previously.
