HALO DRILL

AIM:

To teach surfer to attack the first manoeuvre off their first bottom turn.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises. Clarify with them the effort expected by the coach and explain the benefits of the training to their surfing performances.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes or for a specific number of waves (between 3-6, depending on the conditions).
  • Ask the surfers to perform the best 1st manoeuvre they can produce.
  • Score the manoeuvre 1, 2, or 3 points, depending on the quality of the manoeuvre.
  • Points are awarded for commitment, radicalness, and success.

NOTES TO THE COACH

This approach to starting a wave with a big 1st manoeuvre is known as the “Halo Effect”.

A committed start creates a good impression in the judge’s mind towards that surfer when they compare other surfers who haven’t the same committed approach.

Surfers should be encouraged to take off deep, perform a quality bottom turn, and attack the first section of each wave they ride.
