To get surfers finishing their waves with a face finish instead of a re-entry.

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises.

Clarify with them the effort expected by the coach and explain the benefits of the training to their surfing performances.

  • Send the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes or for a specific number of waves (between 3-6, depending on the conditions).
  • Ask the surfers to perform face finishes instead of their normal re-entry type finishes, face finishes could be snaps, layback snaps, or full roundhouse cutbacks.

This drill teaches the surfer to break out of their normal re-entry finishing style.

It gives them the ability to be more creative and to mix up their finishes so their surfing stays interesting to themselves and the judges.

This is also an ideal drill for surfers of lesser skill, when they are training in dumping surf.

The end section in this type of surf is too powerful for their ability to successfully complete their final move.

If this is the case, get them to perform a face manoeuvre to increase their success rate.
