WHAT IS SHUFFLING?

Shuffling is the act of moving your feet up the board - without cross-stepping.

It's not as elegant, not as pretty, but it's a start.

Shuffling your feet up and back on the board will help you become familiar with the feeling of adjusting your weight to counterbalance your board.

WHY DO IT?

Shuffling is a stepping stone technique, getting you familiar with the sensation of adjusting your weight distribution up and down the board.

It's a rudimentary form of cross-stepping, but a good technique to get things started.

SHUFFLING VS CROSS STEPPING

Like we mentioned just earlier, shuffling is a stepping stone technique before cross-stepping down the track.

It's not something that you want to spend too much time on, or get too familiar with as you don't want bad habits to creep in.

However, it's worth spending a little time getting used to it to begin the whole process:

PRO'S

  • Easier
  • Familiarises you with the sensation of adjusting weight on your surfboard.

CON'S

  • Doesn't look as elegant.
  • Can become a bad habit.
  • Slower to move up and down the board.

HOW TO SHUFFLE

Unlike cross-stepping, whereby one foot crosses over the other, shuffling requires no cross over of the feet whatsoever.

Instead, steps are taken up and down the board shuffling as you go.

Step with your front first, allow your back foot to match, and rinse and repeat until you've made you way to the nose of the board.

WRAPPING IT UP

Shuffling is a stop-gap technique, something to be used to progress quickly onto cross-stepping.

You don't want to stay with this technique too long, just use it until you get comfortable shifting your weight up and down your board.
