I started surfing at 14. Before that I was on a semi-professional squash track — sounds like a left turn, but the muscle memory, the discipline, the obsession with reading an opponent (or a wave) all transferred. Surfing won.

I went on to represent Australia, competed on the WQS, and spent the next twenty-plus years coaching — across road trips, between contests, in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and a lot of in-between. Through all of it, the same thing kept bugging me: most surfers plateau not because they lack ability, but because they don't have anyone breaking the technique down properly. Quality coaching is expensive, location-dependent, and inconsistent.
