THE JOHN JOHN CRUNCH

I literally love this technique...

Inspired by none other than John John Florence himself, this ones a cracker.

Totally counterintuitive at face value, but a damn potent technique once you fully grasp it.

Introducing the John John Crunch!

UH? JOHN JOHN CRUNCH (JJC)... WHAT'S THAT?

The JJC is a technique for taking off on steep waves, like really steep waves.

Sure, he does it taking off under the lip at 10ft maxing pipeline, but regardless we can steal this technique and apply it to the everyday surfer waves.

The technique involves the counterintuitive process of fully committing your weight forward on a late drop (yep you read that right, weight forward), and moulding the shape of your body to the wave.

It's pretty technical, and a very difficult skill to fully master, however the fundamentals of this technique (if harnessed) can have you sticking late take-offs every time.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

This technique is an important one as now that you're exclusively catching green waves, you're going to find yourself in a lot of situations whereby the wave is steeper than you might like.

And with a technique like this in your arsenal, no longer do you have to turn down waves like these, instead you'll have the skills to take off on these steeper waves and make them more often.

Meaning an increased wave count for you, and more opportunities to improve.

BREAKING DOWN THE JJC

The JJC is all about committing your weight forward, staying small, and fitting your body into the curve of the wave.

This video above is an EXTREME example of this technique in action, like really extreme. But, it does highlight the technique in action very well.

Notice how John John counterintuitively has all of his weight forward, right over his board, the complete opposite to what you'd expect.

Also, take note of how small and compact he remains through the pop-up process and how he fits into the curve of the wave as the wave lurches forward.

We're not expecting you to replicate what you see in this video at this stage of the progression process (or at any stage in your life if I'm honest), but we do want you to understand this technique and start introducing it in its most simple form into your surfing when catching steeper waves.

Here's a rundown of this process below;

As a steep wave approaches, get ready to paddle hard.
Let the wave pick up the tail of the board - don't fight it.
Lean all of your weight forward down the face of the wave.
Pop super fast to your feet, adding weight to your inside rail, stay low, and mimic the shape of the wave.
Stay crouched and small, and slowly extend your body up as you ride out of the curve of the wave.

WRAPPING IT UP

Just like many of the techniques that we have been covering as part of this program, this technique is advanced, so we don't expect you to nail it right away.

Far from it.

But, the fundamentals of this technique hold true. So even if you're just adjusting the way you do things slightly taking inspiration from this technique, you'll begin to reap the benefits of what it can do.

Allowing you to take-off on steep waves, and stick them more often.
