WHAT LEVEL SURFER AM I?

DEFINING YOUR LEVEL WITH THE HOUSE OF SURF

Many of our surf coaching courses are grouped and categorised by ability, therefore it's important to categorise yourself correctly to make sure you're in the right group.

Use the definitions below to help identify what level you are.

*If you're on the cusp - in between two levels - we recommend you categorise yourself at the lower level.


BEGINNER - LEVEL 1

You are a beginner surfer if:

  • You've never surfed before.
  • Only surfed a handful of times.
  • You surf exclusively in the whitewater.
  • Struggle to get to your feet consistently.
  • Need assistance to master the basics: Paddling, Popping to your feet, etc.

GOALS FOR THE BEGINNER SURFER

  • Build confidence.
  • Master the basics.
  • Learn to pop-up the right way (without using your knees, ever).
  • Learn how to catch your own waves.
  • Learn how to consistently get to your feet on whitewater waves.
  • Build the skills to begin catching green unbroken waves.

PROGRESSOR - LEVEL 2

You are a progressor surfer if:

  • You're consistently standing up in the whitewater.
  • Attempting to catch green unbroken waves on small days.
  • You're able to catch whitewater waves unassisted.

GOALS FOR THE PROGRESSOR SURFER

  • Learn to surf out the back.
  • Learn which waves to catch and why.
  • Master the techniques to catching green unbroken waves, and riding out of them successfully.
  • Understand how to position yourself in the right spot at the right time to catch better waves.
  • Learn how to trim across an unbroken wave: left & right.
  • Learn how to navigate through, over and under waves.

IMTERMEDIATE - LEVEL 3

You are a intermediate surfer if:

  • You're comfortable surfing 'out the back' unassisted.
  • Are able to paddle for - and catch - small green waves and ride out of them successfully on a consistent basis.
  • You're able to trim across a wave - forehand and backhand.
  • Feel comfortable in waves up to around 3ft (or head high).

GOALS FOR THE IMTERMEDIATE SURFER

  • Build confidence to surf bigger waves (over head high).
  • Learn how to perform basic manoeuvres: Bottom turns, Cutbacks & Carves.
  • Learn how to pump and self generate speed on a wave.
  • Learn how to take-off on steeper, heavier waves.
  • Confidently surfing forehand and backhand with speed and control
  • Finding your place in the lineup and learning how to compete for waves with confidence.
