VARIETY DRILL

AIM:

To teach surfers the skill of mixing up their manoeuvres so that they stay interesting to themselves and judges.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises. Clarify with them the effort expected by the coach and explain the benefits of the training to their surfing performances.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes or for a specific number of waves (between 3-6, depending on the conditions).
  • This drill can be focused on the start or finish of their rides (depending on the drill’s focus) with a different manoeuvre.
  • On their first wave they might start by performing a vertical re- entry, the next wave, a floater, and the next, a layback snap.

NOTES TO THE COACH:

A variety of manoeuvres performed by a surfer keeps the interest of the judges.

Although this drill focuses on only the first or last manoeuvre of a surfer’s rides, the surf coach could also ask the surfers to try to vary the first two manoeuvres of their rides.
