THREE WAVE DRILL

AIM:

To teach surfers to look for and only catch quality waves.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out for 20 minutes.
  • Ask them to catch only 3 waves in this twenty minute period.
  • The best two waves are scored.
  • Therefore the surfer has one throw-away wave.
  • After the surfer has caught their third wave, they must return to the beach no matter how much time remains.

NOTES TO THE COACH

This drill is particularly useful for surfers who have a problem with catching poor waves or the problem of catching too many waves in their heats.

The coach should instruct the surfers to use the entire 20 minute period if possible, to look for waves with the optimum manoeuvre potential for that day.

Because of the small number of waves to be caught coupled with the drill’s duration, this drill forces the surfers to be highly selective.
