SURFING SURVIVAL

AIM:

To make the surfers concentrate on one particular manoeuvre and the

success of its execution.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfer to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises.

Clarify with them the effort expected by the coach and explain the benefits of the training to their surfing performances.

DRILL:

  • A group of surfers are asked to go into the surf for 30 minutes and on the waves they catch must perform a target manoeuvre (for example, floaters, vertical re- entries etc).
  • The surfers are allowed to have one wipeout while performing this manoeuvre during this time, but if they fall again whilst attempting the manoeuvre they must return to the beach.
  •  The surfer who is left out in the surf the longest is the winner of this drill.

NOTES TO THE COACH

Surfing survival is a great drill for a large group of surfers.

If a coach has a large variation in the surfing abilities in the group, the better surfers are allowed to make no mistakes.
