STARTING DRILL

AIM:

To teach surfers to start their heats with a quality wave.

PREPARATION:

Ask the surfers to go for a light jog on the beach followed by stretching exercises.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out for five minutes.
  • Ask them to catch and ride a wave that will achieve a score set by the coach.
  •  For example, a 7 point ride.
  •  After the surfer has ridden their wave, they must return to the beach.

NOTES TO THE COACH

The score that the surfer must attempt to achieve should be realistically allocated to each individual surfer.

For example, a surfer on the world tour might be required to achieve a score of 8 points, whereas a novice competitor might be required to achieve a score of 5 points.

Additionally, the surfer should be made aware of the scoring system used by the coach.

For example, the coach can say; “if you perform three major manoeuvres and finish successfully, I’ll give you 7 points”.
