SPEED DRILL

AIM:

To allow surfers to get the feeling of going fast on their waves. Additionally, to force the surfers to work hard in small waves.

PREPARATION:

Explain the importance to speed in a surfer’s performance, especially in small waves. Encourage the surfers to work hard when riding the waves they catch, and surf rail-to-rail when possible.

DRILL:

  • Send the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes or for a specific number of waves (between 3-6, depending on the conditions).
  • They must surf as hard and as fast as they can on the waves they catch even at the expense of missing manoeuvres along the wave.

NOTES TO THE COACH

This drill is a good drill to start a training session. It gets the surfers working hard right from the outset and can lead into more advanced drills after completing the speed drill.

This drill is well suited to waves under 1 metre.
