SIMULATED HEATS (WITH PLAN)
AIM:
To teach surfers how to devise a plan and execute the plan in a competitive heat.
PREPARATION:
Ask the surfers to study the ocean for 10 minutes.
They are asked to devise a plan for the forthcoming simulated heat and write the plan down on paper.
This can be discussed with the coach if desired.
DRILL:
NOTES TO THE COACH
Planning is one of the fundamental skills of high level performance.
All elite sportspeople do planning before they train and compete.
In surfing, most planning is performed in the surfers head, but it is the opinion of this author that if a surfer maintains a competition book which contains their heat plans and evaluations, their learning rate and successes will be enhanced.
They can consider such a competition book as their “progress” book as a competition surfer, something which can be reviewed before important competitions or when faced with unfamiliar surf conditions.
